The Gipuzkoa Football Federation will honour Mikel Oyarzabal and Martín Zubimendi after Spain’s World Cup triumph.

According to Diario Vasco, the federation’s board has approved a new award for the pair, with the ceremony to be held when their schedules allow. Both were similarly recognised in 2024 after winning the Euros in Berlin.

Oyarzabal, decisive in Berlin with the winner against England, delivered a standout World Cup. He scored five goals, equalling David Villa’s tally at South Africa 2010 and Emilio Butragueño’s mark at Mexico 1986.

Zubimendi saw little action during the tournament. He reached the final without a minute played, then, at the start of extra time, replaced Rodri, who was named player of the tournament.

The Real Sociedad captain is the first player to win a World Cup while wearing the club’s shirt. He did not score at MetLife Stadium, yet his impact had been made long before kick-off, and he has helped return the club to trophy-winning ways after more than three decades.

The recognition reflects a golden spell for sport in the province, with recent honourees including Beñat Turrientes, Irene Paredes, Aiara Agirrezabala, Julia Arrula, Mirari Uria, Izarne Sarasola and Intza Egiguren. Local academies across Gipuzkoa continue to produce large numbers of elite athletes. From Eibar and Donostia to the summit of the game, the pathway is clear.
