Girona head coach Michel has added fuel to growing speculation linking his side with a surprise winter move for Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Reports in Spain have suggested that the Montilivi club are exploring the possibility of signing the German international on loan in January.

Girona are reportedly keen to strengthen a position that has caused concern throughout the season.

While no formal approach has been confirmed, Michel did little to quieten the rumours when asked about the situation at the Catalan Football Federation gala.

“He is a top player. Everyone would like to have a player like that,” Michel said (via Gerard Romero), a remark that has only intensified talk of Girona’s interest.

Ter Stegen’s future at Barcelona has become increasingly uncertain after losing his place in the starting XI to Joan Garcia.

The 32-year-old remains one of Europe’s most decorated goalkeepers, but a lack of regular football could prove damaging to his hopes of reclaiming the No.1 shirt for Germany ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Girona’s interest is understood to be driven by their own goalkeeping issues.

Paulo Gazzaniga has struggled for consistency, while Dominik Livakovic has yet to fully convince Michel or establish himself as a guaranteed starter.

As a result, the club are actively assessing options that could provide immediate stability and leadership at the back.

However, financial constraints remain a major obstacle. Girona reportedly cannot cover Ter Stegen’s full wages for the remainder of the campaign.

Any deal would require Barcelona to subsidise a significant portion of his salary.

Still, Barca could be open to a compromise if Ter Stegen expresses a clear desire to move in search of more playing time.

He reportedly favours a switch that would restore him as an undisputed first choice, making Girona an attractive destination.

With the January window approaching, this story appears far from over.
