Girona boss Míchel reiterates season goals as Getafe defeat all but ends La Liga hopes | OneFootball

Girona head coach Míchel has moved to reiterate his side’s goals for the season, on the back of another damaging defeat.

The Catalans, of course, marked their return to action earlier this evening, making the trip to the Estadio Coliseum for a La Liga meeting with Getafe.

After table-topping Real Madrid made short work of Osasuna earlier in the day, Girona headed into proceedings aware that anything but a victory would all but bring an end to the club’s dwindling title hopes.

When all was said and done in Spain’s capital, however, not only did the evening’s visitors fail to secure three points, but they couldn’t even manage one.

Instead, owing to a solitary strike on the part of youngster Jesús Santiago, it was Getafe who marched on to the right side of a 1-0 result.

As much means that Girona now sit a full 10 points off the title pace being set by Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid, with just nine games of the season remaining.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, it therefore came as little surprise when the subject of his side – who so recently looked like legitimate title contenders – slipping further and further away from the La Liga summit was put to the aforementioned Míchel.

And, in his response, Girona’s boss was quick to provide a reminder that he has long been unwavering in his stance that the Blanquivermells’ goal remains clear – a top-4 finish:

“La Liga is not our goal,” the Spaniard began, as cited by Diario Sport. “Keeping up with Real Madrid is not our goal, they have only lost one game this season and they can win every game. Our goal is to qualify for the Champions League.”
