Girona came close to victory on an afternoon that was meant to be heroic but ended with a very bitter taste. Míchel's team overcame a 0-2 deficit against Oviedo thanks to two penalty goals by Cristhian Stuani and a rocket from Ounahi, but once again, history repeated itself: a goal in the last second of stoppage time, scored by David Carmo, sealed the 3-3 draw and left Montilivi stunned.
The match started with good feelings but lacked continuity. Despite an early clear chance by Joel Roca, which was stopped by a great save from Aarón Escandell, Girona gradually faded. Míchel's side gave ground to a serious and patient Oviedo. A penalty awarded for a handball by Àlex Moreno—confirmed by VAR—allowed Viñas to put the Asturians ahead before halftime (0-1).
The second half did not start any better. Rondón made it 0-2 with a header from a corner. The introduction of Stuani and Ounahi changed the script. The Uruguayan striker re-energized the team, earning a penalty after being pushed in the box and converting it himself to narrow the gap (1-2). Shortly after, Ounahi equalized with an unstoppable shot from the edge of the box (2-2), igniting the crowd.
As time was running out, the Moroccan once again earned another penalty after a skillful move in the box. Stuani, flawless from the penalty spot, completed the comeback in the ninetieth minute (3-2). Montilivi erupted in celebration, already savoring three vital points to climb out of the hole. But football was cruel: in the eighth minute of added time, Carmo capitalized on a corner to score with a header and secure the final 3-3.
Next week, Girona visits Getafe. Before that, they must get through the Copa del Rey round against Constància. The match is on Tuesday in Inca.
