Girona manager Michel Sanchez has proven over the last two seasons that making miracles is possible, but he sent a stern warning to the fans, players and club at Montilivi that they are behind schedule. Just two days away from their La Liga debut at the Benito Villamarin against Real Betis, Michel’s squad is still in flux.

“The preseason has been bad. We have not been able to have all the players available. Right now I am not clear about the team or the way to play… and we are five days away from the competition,” Michel fumed.

Girona are coming off a preseason with three defeats out of five, including two 4-0 thrashings against Newcastle United and Toulouse. They lost their final game 3-2 to Bournemouth over the weekend.

“I’m impatient. I don’t know how the team will go into the season. There are players who have trained less because they arrived late, but I am convinced that we will have a good week to arrive at the league match in good shape.”

“We don’t have to be worried, but we do have to be alert. With work, the team will give a very good version,” he told Relevo.

So far, centre-backs Alejandro Frances and Ladislav Krejci have arrived, Oriol Romeu has returned, Donny van de Beek and Bryan Gil have come in on loan too, while Gabriel Misehouy and Abel Ruiz have been signed outright. Despite those seven additions, Diario AS say that Michel wants four to five more signings in order to be comfortable with his squad this season.

The first is likely to be Aberdeen striker Bojan Miovski, whom Girona have agreed a deal for. That should complete their attacking options, alongside Ruiz and captain Cristhian Stuani, but having lost Eric Garcia, Yan Couto, Artem Dovbyk, Savio and Aleix Garcia, a number of key players have departed.
