In his first season in Spanish football, Artem Dovbyk walked away with the Pichichi Trophy, having scored 24 goals in La Liga. He secured the award during the final round of fixtures when closest challenger Alexander Sorloth blanked for Villarreal, less than 24 hours after he himself had scored a hat-trick during Girona’s 7-0 victory over Granada.
As per Diario AS, Dovbyk has become the first non-Barcelona or Real Madrid player to win the Pichichi in 15 years. Diego Forlan was the latest player from outside the Clasico duo, when he scored 33 goals for Atletico Madrid during the 2008-09 season.
Funnily enough, Dovbyk could be heading to Atleti himself in the summer, as Diego Simeone’s side are very interested in making the Ukrainian their new number nine, and he would play alongside Antoine Griezmann in attack. Girona may find it very difficult to retain his services, but even if he does go, the one season he amassed was very special.
