Girona have signed 20-year-old midfielder Brian Fariñas from Barcelona’s academy, the Benicarló native moving in search of minutes at a higher level.
According to Superdeporte, the switch, long expected, now appears close to a deal worth 1.5 million euros for 50 per cent of his rights. The clubs’ good relations and geographical proximity helped seal the agreement.
Fariñas left Villarreal’s youth set-up for La Masia as a child, and with heavy competition in his position across Barcelona’s squads he chose to move, albeit not far.
He delivered five goals and seven assists this season and was the player most used by Belletti in Barça B.
His departure follows a series of exits from the Catalan academy, including Álex Valle, Mac Guiu, Chadi Riad and Mikayil Faye. Spain under-19 standout Quim Junyent, fresh from winning the European title, also refused a new deal to leave on a free.
