According to Le Progres, Girondins de Bordeaux have been excluded from all national competitions for 2026-27 by the DNCG, and the club has appealed.

Bordeaux intend to challenge the ruling within the regulatory window to finalise funding for next season. If the appeals fail, they would have to restart at best in the sixth tier, Régionale 1.

The sanction, citing a liquidity shortfall, follows administrative demotions in 2021, 2022 and 2024. The first two were overturned, but in 2024 the drop from Ligue 2 to National 2 was confirmed after insolvency proceedings.

At a 9 June hearing, president-owner Gerard Lopez did not provide the nine million euros needed to close 2025-26 and to fund 2026-27. The club has sought more time to finalise a sale to Sparta Capital, a British fund founded in 2021 by Franck Tuil.

Sparta is expected to provide 10 million euros within days as debt to help finance the new season. Talks are also under way with Bordeaux Métropole and city hall over a rent cut and purchase options for the stadium and the Le Haillan training centre.

A further condition concerns a legal case over 19.7 million euros in unpaid stadium rent, linked to a letter of intent in which Lopez guaranteed payment in case of default. Since 2021, Bordeaux have fallen from Ligue 1 to National 2, lost professional status and their academy, and spent one year under court protection. They missed promotion in each of the past two seasons and had qualified on sporting merit for next season’s National 1, the new name of the fourth division.
