Andy Robertson joked his deflected goal against Atletico Madrid is deserving of the Puskas award, and insists his side need to find a “simpler” way of winning games after leaving it late once again.

Virgil van Dijk rose high late on to head home Dominik Szoboszlai’s corner after Atletico Madrid had come back from 2-0 down to level the score at 2-2.

Robertson opened the scoring for his side when his free-kick took a deflection and beat Jan Oblak, before Mo Salah added another. But it looked as though the Reds were set to drop points when Marcos Llorente scored twice.

“I was just trying to get in the line of the keeper, so he couldn’t see,” Robertson said when asked about his goal.

“It’s a great finish, give me the Puskas award now. But no, honestly I didn’t know anything about it. It was a great start and thank goodness it went in.

“We’ve got a lot of new players, they need to settle in. Playing for a big club like this isn’t easy. They’ve all done really well.

“They’re the future. They’re the ones going to take this club forward. They’ve shown glimpses and they’re only going to get better.

“We need to get back to winning a bit simpler and easier. The assistant manager turned to me when Virgil put it in and said he’s getting too old for it, so I can’t imagine what the fans are like.

“It’s a great thing to have, being able to keep going until the end. When you’re 2-0 up and playing so well in the first half it should’ve been a more comfortable night.”
