Goal-line technology still not mandatory for Euro 2028 qualifiers | OneFootball

Goal-line technology will not be used for Friday’s Türkiye v France Nations League match in the small Izmit stadium. The system is also not guaranteed during Euro 2028 qualifying.

According to L'Équipe, UEFA’s rules do not require goal-line technology in Nations League group games, leaving it to the host federation if the visiting team agrees. VAR will operate for the tie.

The technology will, however, be in service at the Nations League finals in June, regardless of the teams involved.

The same approach applies to Euro 2028 qualifying, due to begin in March, where goal-line is not compulsory. It will be mandatory at the tournament itself, to be staged in England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Goal-line technology is obligatory in the Champions League and Europa League, but not in the Europa Conference League, except for the final.

Financial considerations are cited for it not being universal across Europe, with costs significant for some federations or clubs, though more manageable at scale. In France, the LFP pays about €1.5 million a year for more than 300 matches, excluding initial installation.
