FC Bayern could be set for a surprising change in the goalkeeping position this summer. While everything is focused on the future of Manuel Neuer and Jonas Urbig, an old acquaintance is now also coming back into focus: Alexander Nübel
As the Münchner Abendzeitung reports, a return of the 29-year-old to Säbener Straße is still a realistic scenario. Nübel is still under contract with Bayern until 2030, but is currently on loan to VfB Stuttgart until the end of June. Since his move from Schalke 04 in 2020, he has only played four competitive matches for the record champions. He was first loaned out to AS Monaco, then to Stuttgart – there was no way around Neuer in Munich
It is precisely this personnel issue that will now once again decide Nübel’s future. If Neuer extends his contract, which expires in the summer, it is unlikely that Nübel will return. In this case, the keeper is likely to look for a new challenge. According to reports, the Premier League in particular would appeal to him. Bayern could also achieve a decent transfer fee in the event of a sale, with his market value estimated at around twelve million euros
If Neuer retires, however, there could be open competition at FC Bayern – between Nübel and Jonas Urbig
The 22-year-old has been in goal regularly following Neuer’s muscle injury and is using the big stage to recommend himself to Vincent Kompany. He will also be trusted in the Bundesliga top match at Borussia Dortmund on 28 February. So far, Urbig has put in solid performances and presented himself in a relaxed manner

After the 3-0 win in Bremen, he commented on the cooperation in the goalkeeping team and explained that he was learning „a lot“ from Neuer, Sven Ulreich and goalkeeping coach Michael Rechner. He was deliberately reserved about his own perspective: „But all future issues, decisions, that’s not something I decide on. And that’s why I’m not going to judge it.“
According to the Abendzeitung newspaper, Nübel is expecting a decision from Neuer by the beginning of April. By then at the latest, it should be clear whether FC Bayern will actually make a goalkeeping move in the summer – and whether Nübel will be allowed to seriously fight for the Neuer legacy once again.
