Manchester United bowed out of the Carabao Cup on Thursday night following a 4-3 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on the road.
The Red Devils produced a good attacking display at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but they were let down by big defensive errors.
Altay Bayindir’s poor save contributed to Dominic Solanke opening the scoring for Spurs.
Lisandro Martinez was partly responsible for the second and third goals conceded before Bayindir made another blunder for the fourth.
The Turkish international was beaten by the flight of Heung-min Son’s inswinging corner.
Spurs midfielder Lucas Bergvall made slight contact with Bayindir’s left arm, but this should not have prevented him from making a save.
There was no VAR on the night, but the goal would not have been disallowed on review.
Bayindir may have played his last game for United. He could depart when the transfer window reopens in the New Year.
The 26-year-old has cut a frustrated figure with his lack of playing time, and he reportedly plans to leave the Red Devils.
His performance at Tottenham is unlikely to improve his starting prospects. United could be prepared to replace him next month.
The Red Devils have opened talks for Botafogo goalkeeper John Victor, who recently won the Brazilian Serie A and Copa Libertadores titles.
He has been identified as someone who could provide competition for places with Andre Onana, which Bayindir has failed to do.
The 28-year-old is a good ball-playing goalkeeper like Onana but possesses better reflexes and has an aerial presence at 197 cm.
Victor posted a 79 percent save average in the recent league campaign, higher than Onana’s 68% average.
Bayindir could be offloaded next month to facilitate Victor’s arrival.
