The Magpies secured a late 2-1 win at St. James' Park on Wednesday evening, with Wissa opening his goalscoring account inside ten minutes in front of the Leazes End before Saša Lukić levelled the quarter-final tie in swift fashion.

Just like October's Premier League meeting against the Cottagers, Newcastle sealed a dramatic win in the dying stages, courtesy of Lewis Miley's stoppage-time header, to set up a two-legged semi-final meeting with Manchester City.

After netting his first goal in the iconic number nine shirt, Howe was pleased for the 29-year-old to get off the mark following a long-term injury sustained on international duty, while the African striker echoed similar views in his post-match interview.

"We wanted to bounce back from the weekend. I think we did pretty well. We showed a lot of character, a lot going forward and I'm very pleased with the performance today."

On scoring his first Newcastle United goal since arriving at St. James' Park from Brentford in September...

"I was dreaming about it a couple of months ago and now I've got my first goal with this shirt. It's so special for me. This is where I wanted to be and where I needed to be and add a tap-in so quite happy with the goal.

"It's my story. No story is a straight line. I really wanted to score earlier but, unfortunately, I was injured. I came back from the injury and had intense work with the medical staff so that goal is for them.

"I worked hard with them and want to thank them deeply because it's not easy. I'm quite happy today.

On targeting a first major trophy of his career...

"I want to do it. A trophy is not something everyone can achieve so I want to do it and I know I'm in the right place to achieve that."

On returning to Premier League action on Saturday, with the Magpies welcoming Chelsea to Tyneside...

"The confidence is definitely higher. Now we've won, we move on. We need to enjoy tonight, rest tomorrow and look forward to Saturday's game.

"This is where we need to be and what to focus on to beat Chelsea and get another three points at home."
