According to both sources, the English defender has completed his medical tests with the Premier League side.
Sheth adds that the clubs and the player hope to finalise the deal within the next 48 hours.
According to Romano, Godfrey has completed the first part of his medical and clubs are exchanging documents before completing the transfer.
Godfrey joined Atalanta on a permanent €12m deal from Everton last summer but has struggled to get playing time under Gian Piero Gasperini in Bergamo.
The 26-year-old has only made five appearances across all competitions this term, playing just 22 minutes of football in Serie A.
His Atalanta contract runs out in June 2029
