Real Madrid forward Gonzalo Garcia recently spoke to El Larguero, sharing his thoughts on his breakthrough during the FIFA Club World Cup, the chance to leave last summer, and life at the Santiago Bernabéu.

The 21-year-old made a big impression during the Club World Cup, finishing as joint-top scorer with four goals. Reflecting on that period, he said,

“I look at it now with a little more perspective, as time has passed and I’ve come to terms with it a little better. I look back and I’m surprised myself.”

Despite receiving offers from other clubs, Gonzalo chose to remain at Real Madrid, fully aware that he would not be a first-choice starter.

“My only option was always to stay at Real Madrid. For me, it’s a dream to be part of the first team and I’m very happy with the decision I made.”

Competition at Madrid is fierce, with stars like Kylian Mbappe and even Endrick challenging for places. On this, Gonzalo noted,

“We’re talking about the best club in the world, and obviously, the competition is intense because the best players are always here, but I’ve been in the youth academy for many years.

“I’ve been a Real Madrid fan since I was a kid, and the truth is, I don’t regret the decision I made.”

At the start of the 2025/26 season, there was discussion over who would inherit the vacated number 9 shirt.

Endrick ultimately received the number, with Gonzalo showing maturity about the decision.

“I knew there was a possibility of keeping the number 9, but I didn’t get to choose.

“The club offers numbers to those who have been there the longest, and Endrick also wanted it, so he kept it.

“I wasn’t going to complain; I’m happy to be part of the squad, no matter what number I wear.”

Gonzalo also addressed the heavy 2-5 defeat against Atletico Madrid. “We didn’t know how to read the game properly. It happened the way it did.

“The manager said it before: joys and disappointments should be short-lived. We’re focused on analysing what happened and trying to learn from it.”

On Alonso, Valverde and future

Speaking on Xabi Alonso’s influence, he added, “He always showed confidence in me during the Club World Cup, giving me advice to keep me as calm as possible.

“He’s very approachable with everyone. He’s one of the best coaches in the world.”

Meanwhile, he was also asked about the situation with Federico Valverde and his playing position, which escalated for no apparent reason.

“No player has refused to play in another position. We’re all willing to play anywhere to help the team.

“I’m sure any player is willing to play anywhere for Real Madrid. I would play full-back, centre-back, or goalkeeper if they asked me.”

Finally, looking ahead, the young forward remains focused on the present,

“Right now, my mind is only focused on this season with Madrid, making the most of every minute I’m given.

There’s no need to waste time thinking about the future because I’m where I want to be now,” he concluded.
