2-0 win v Red Star Belgrade

To conclude their training camp in Belek, our FC Red Bull Salzburg won their friendly match against Red Star Belgrade 2-0. Both goals came before the break - with an own goal by the Serbian champions and a strike from Edmund Baidoo sealing the victory.

MATCH SUMMARY

Our Red Bulls started the game well and quickly took the lead. Red Star defender Krunic attempted to steal the ball from Eddy Baidoo's feet but instead deflected it into his own net – and we were 1-0 up (11'). Much of the subsequent play took place in the Serbian half. Baidoo again had a chance, dribbling past goalkeeper Matheus but failing to get a shot away.

After almost half an hour, the breakthrough finally came: with a goal by Baidoo! Our lads responded to a Belgrade corner with a counter-attack via Kerim Alajbegovic and Moussa Yeo, who sent the speedy striker through on goal to finish coolly (29'). Alajbegovic almost added another with a powerful shot from the right side of the box (33'), as did Karim Konate with a header (36').

After that, Marko Arnautovic's team gained some momentum and created two good chances, both cleared off the line by Frans Krätzig and Alexander Schlager, respectively. Just before half-time, a foul on Konate, which was likely only punished with a yellow card due to the friendly nature of the match, is worth mentioning.

After the break, the Serbian champions, currently 17th in the UEFA Europa League, initially pressed forward but failed to create any real danger. Alajbegovic then threatened again, his shot going just wide of the top corner (59'), followed by Joane Gadou with a header and Clement Bischoff, whose shot was blocked. Substitute Enrique Aguilar could also have extended the lead but fired over the bar.

Thomas Letsch's men therefore concluded their training camp in Belek, one week before their UEFA Europa League home match against FC Basel, with a successful friendly.

VIEWS

We played a very good game today for the full 90 minutes. We were extremely determined from the start, never gave the opponents any breathing room, and won the ball back high up the pitch a lot – and that continued throughout the entire match. The victory was absolutely deserved, and we've taken a step forward today. We had fantastic conditions here, a great pitch, and a top-notch hotel. Therefore, we were able to fully implement just what we had planned. The 2-0 win against Red Star Belgrade rounds it all off.

Thomas Letsch

We implemented a lot of what we practiced in the training camp in today's game. We weren't just very good with the ball, but we were especially strong defensively and played compactly as a team. Winning without conceding a goal is a great boost.
