Newcastle United faced off against Blackburn Rover at Ewood Park earlier tonight as they hoped to earn a positive result in the FA Cup. The Magpies made a solid start to the game but were held to a scoreless draw at the half-time interval.

Anthony Gordon gave Newcastle the lead in the 71st minute which was cancelled out by Sammie Szmodics’ effort just eight minutes later. The contest ended with a 1-1 scoreline after normal time.

Both teams failed to find the winning goal in extra time as the match went to penalties.

Newcastle ended up winning on penalties by a 4-3 margin after the contest finished 1-1 after extra-time.

LB: Dan Burn – 7/10

He performed his defensive duties well and made two decent chances in the final third.

CM: Sean Longstaff – 7.5/10

Longstaff was a positive influence at both ends of the field.

CM: Bruno Guimaraes – 8/10

He anchored the midfield with conviction and was a good presence on the ball. Guimaraes scored his penalty in the shootout.

CM: Joe Willock – 6/10

Willock struggled to get into the flow of the game and was replaced after the hour mark.

RW: Jacob Murphy – 6/10

He struggled to influence the game in the final third and was substituted in the 61st minute.

ST: Alexander Isak – 6/10

Isak failed to threaten the opponent’s goal and could last only 61 minutes before being replaced.

LW: Anthony Gordon – 9/10

Gordon caused all sorts of headaches for the Blackburn defenders. He scored Newcastle’s only goal in normal time before going on to convert his spot-kick in the shootout.
