FC Bayern fought for Anthony Gordon for weeks, held talks with the player and was at times considered the favorite to sign him. In the end, however, the England international opted for FC Barcelona – and his first statements as a Barça professional are unlikely to go down well with everyone in Munich
At his official presentation in Barcelona, Gordon made no secret of how excited he was about the move to the Catalans. Particularly noteworthy: the 25-year-old surprised the journalists present with his knowledge of Spanish and immediately presented himself as a convinced Barça player
„I’m ready for this challenge and I’m totally aware of the club’s history and the incredible players who have worn this shirt. I’m very emotional and proud to be here. It’s a dream come true,“ explained Gordon
The winger was even clearer afterwards when explaining his move
Gordon had been heavily linked with FC Bayern for weeks, with sporting director Max Eberl publicly confirming the club’s interest and the Munich-based club being considered a strong supporter of a transfer internally
But according to Gordon, the situation changed abruptly when Barcelona became concrete
„I found out about the interest very late. As soon as I knew that Barça was a serious option, the question no longer arose,“ explained the Englishman
A statement that can certainly be interpreted as a dig at Bayern, as it suggests that Munich were no longer a realistic option at the time
„I always wanted to go to Barça. Barça is the biggest club on the planet. That’s what I dreamed of as a child,“ Gordon added

Hansi Flick was apparently another decisive factor in Gordon’s rejection of FC Bayern
The former Bayern coach is said to have made a lasting impression on Gordon in personal talks
„I spoke to him and was even more enthusiastic afterwards. He is a very good person and an incredible coach,“ enthused the attacking player
He was also impressed by Barcelona’s sporting development under Flick: „What he has achieved at Barça in a short space of time is incredible. I hope that we can both win many titles.“
For FC Bayern, the failed Gordon transfer is a major setback in the current transfer summer
The Englishman was regarded as one of the absolute dream players for the attack, but in the end Munich did not want to exceed any financial limits and withdrew from the bidding duel with Barcelona
However, Gordon’s statements now clearly show that even if Bayern had made a financial investment, the outcome might have remained the same. For the England international, it was apparently clear that Barcelona was his first choice.
