Gornal Athletic have condemned the crowd disorder that marred Saturday’s Midlands Football League Division One play-off final against Sutton United, with a 15-year-old arrested on suspicion of violent disorder.
The club issued a statement on social media after ugly scenes at full time, when punches were thrown and flares launched into the crowd at the biggest home gate of their season. Angry exchanges also involved supporters, players and police.
In its message, the club said such behaviour had no place in football and did not reflect its values or those of the vast majority who act with respect and integrity.
Gornal added that it worked with the Midlands Football League to ensure stewards were in place and formally asked West Midlands Police to be present throughout the match, but said officers only attended after the incident.
The club said it would review all aspects with the relevant authorities, take any necessary action against those responsible and continue striving to provide a safe, welcoming environment. It also thanked supporters who represented the club in the right manner.
West Midlands Police said they reviewed intelligence and liaised with club officials over plans, which included using experienced stewards from a professional club. The force said local officers were on duty, responded within minutes and arrested a suspect at the scene, and that enquiries are ongoing to identify others.
