With three weeks until Real Sociedad begin their league campaign, Jon Gorrotxategi is unlikely to be ready for the La Cartuja opener against Betis on 21 August.
The 23-year-old midfielder from Eibar has missed all friendlies and group sessions due to pubic pain. AS reports that the medical staff are prioritising caution with a tricky issue, judging timelines by daily progress and how he feels.
This setback follows his first season in the senior side, where he formed a double pivot with Beñat Turrientes. Despite his top-flight debut, his form earned a place in Luis de la Fuente’s preliminary Spain squad for the World Cup.
The groin problem first surfaced in March. It left him short of full fitness for the Copa del Rey final and kept him out of the final two league matches.
Even with that disrupted finish, he played 37 games across La Liga and the Copa del Rey last term, totalling 2,645 minutes. His only goal was a stoppage-time winner in the derby against Athletic at Anoeta.
Gorrotxategi is expected to be important this season as Real Sociedad contest the league, Copa del Rey, Europa League and Supercopa de España. Once fit, he will link up with Pellegrino Matarazzo and rebuild sharpness at Zubieta. For now, his progress is positive.
