Alan Smith poured praise on Matheus Cunha after the forward extended Manchester United’s lead in emphatic fashion.

37 minutes after Casemiro had risen the highest to find the back of the net from a free-kick and break the deadlock, he assisted his Brazilian compatriot, who scored his second goal in back-to-back matches with a scintillating finish.

Cunha was played through into Bernd Leno’s area and struck the ball first-time at a tight angle to rifle his effort past the German goalkeeper – before reeling off to replicate his iconic surfing celebration from last week at the Emirates.

Reacting to the goal on Sky Sports’ commentary, Alan Smith said: “He’s a Manchester United player, this fella. He’s got something about him.

“[He’s got] stardust in his boots. The Stretford End love him.”

The summer signing was granted his first start under Michael Carrick in Patrick Dorgu’s absence, and it’s safe to say he repaid his manager’s faith throughout the 74 minutes he spent on the pitch.

Aside from his contribution, Cunha recorded five touches in Fulham’s area and two passes into the final third. Defensively, he made three recoveries and won one tackle, while also winning three ground duels and one aerial duel (Fotmob).

Next up for Carrick’s revitalised Reds is a home clash with Tottenham Hotspur, who are currently in action against Manchester City, at Old Trafford in next Saturday’s early kick-off slot.
