Bolton Wanderers have had a disappointing start to their new campaign, with the Trotters sitting 18th. A new potential defender could provide experience in their time of need, though, with Sean Morrison tipped for a move to the Toughsheet Community Stadium by supporters.

Ian Evatt's side have a strong enough squad to compete for promotion this season, but off the back of the play-off final defeat to Oxford United, Wanderers have started with a bit of a lull.

Defensively, they have options good enough to compete, but may be lacking the experience required to achieve promotion.

Despite the window being shut, Wanderers can still add to their side through the free agent market, and a defensive addition could be an area where they can improve.

A free agent still searching for a club in the 2024/25 season is Sean Morrison.

The 33-year-old was released by Rotherham after their relegation back to League One, and is still seeking his next challenge.

Morrison has "clearly got the pedigree"

Evatt has been busy improving the squad over the summer, and the intent is clear to push for the Championship again.

The Trotters haven't got off to the best start in their bid for promotion.

Morrison joining may be what Evatt needs in his squad, in terms of quality and experience, just to steady the ship before kicking on up the table once more.

FLW's Bolton Wanderers fan pundit, Oliver Jaques, has suggested that Morrison could provide a great option, telling the website: "Probably Sean Morrison (a free agent worth signing). For what it's worth, our squad is pretty set. If I had to pick, it would be him.

"We look a little bit fragile at the back, and we lack that senior head at the back, someone like Morrison, who's played all over the EFL and put in a decent amount of games for Rotherham last season as well.

"He's still clearly got the pedigree and the fitness, more importantly as well, considering he's in his early thirties.

"It is time with have a bit more experience and know-how. I think he'd be good for us."

The EFL veteran has played for six clubs over his career, and has experience in the promotion department.

Under Neil Warnock, he played 39 games in the 2017/18 season, helping the Bluebirds return to the Premier League after four seasons. He was a key contributor at both ends of the pitch.

A key figure around the dressing room, and a stature that Bolton would take on board no doubt.

The Trotters boss has been flirting with the idea of bringing in a free agent to support the squad in their League One fortunes.

Football Insider reported that former Fulham winger, Sylvester Jasper, is reportedly on his radar, with Blackburn Rovers providing competition.

Evatt previously told The Bolton News regarding the signing of the mystery free agent: "We are working hard to make it happen. The issue we have is that other leagues are still trying to sign players too – and not necessarily just in this country.

"We have a battle and a wrestle on our hands, but we are doing as much as we can, within reason, but we are hopeful and we have left a spot clear. Everyone will see that when we publish the list with the EFL, so we want to fill it."
