Gotham FC keeps missing that one item from their youth development programs

NJ/NY Gotham FC is no stranger to developing players. Under Juan Carlos Amorós, the Bats have churned out two of the last three NWSL Rookie of the Years via Jenna Nighswonger and Lilly Reale. Yes, both are no longer with the club, but those were due to the players' decisions. Also, the team is not afraid to sign someone young with plenty of potential, as seen with the Mak Whitham signing.

Then, over the last few years, Gotham FC has been investing in the local youth by partnering with local clubs and the community via the Alliance. The program was launched in 2024 to identify players with potential and provide development opportunities. The Bats also launched the Keep Her in the Game initiative to encourage girls to continue with sports and so much more.

Gotham FC is close to having the best youth program

And now, Gotham has introduced the Pro Player Pathway. Per the club, the latest plan is a "comprehensive development ecosystem designed to create a clear and structured route from elite youth soccer to the professional game." In addition, the plan will include the "Gotham FC Development Center and Residency Program; showcase opportunities through the Gotham FC Alliance of regional youth clubs; and plans to launch a U23 team featuring emerging first-team players."

As a whole, the recent initiative is a good one. It allows Gotham FC to become more involved and ideally find the players of the future.

Alas, the club is missing one important item that they should have by now. Between all of the programs, they are so close to it. So, why is the NJ/NY team lacking a full-fledged academy? Why has one not been developed and declared?

In some ways, it is like Gotham is taking shortcuts when it comes to their development programs. Rather than having their own academy teams, they are instead utilizing the local clubs. There will be what is considered programming for U16 and U18 players. Plus, a major positive is the residency program, which will allow young players to properly train, continue their education, receive support, and more.

Still, the full academy is lacking, and that is critical in player development. It has been argued before that Gotham needs an academy. Why not announce one and start one since there are already so many components with the player development programs?

Money cannot be the issue, for the club is investing in these programs, continuing to sign and retain players, and has their own training center on the way. Moreover, New York City FC has their own academy for girls, and the MLS club does not even have a women's team. If anything, the two clubs could maybe combine forces and become partners, allowing the NYCFC girls' academy to become a part of the NWSL side. That would be a story for another day.

Nevertheless, Gotham FC is so close to having one of the best youth development programs. All they need is an academy.
