NJ/NY Gotham FC opened up their NWSL title defense with a 1-0 victory over 2026 expansion side Boston Legacy FC. It certainly was not a pretty match, with there being more yellow cards than shots on goal, but the Bats managed to come away with three points on the road, which is always a difficult task in the NWSL.

Given that this was Boston Legacy's first game in the NWSL and that most of their players were making their league debuts, with just four of their Starting XI having previous NWSL experience, it was always a little bit of a mystery what to expect from the team. And while some things did live up to expectations, hard to break down and a real physical style of play, some of the individual players and their general attacking play were a little better than expected.

For Gotham, it was at times a bit of a struggle to get things going in the attacking phase of the game. But generally, they had control for the vast majority of the 90 minutes. Another goal would have been nice to see, but getting the three points in what was a little bit of a unique game and situation with extra pomp and circumstance was all that mattered.

Before the match even started, there were major talking points stemming from both teams' starting lineups. For Gotham FC, with both Mandy Freeman and Bruninha ruled out due to injury, there were questions about who would end up at right-back. Many assumed it would be Jess Carter with Tierna Davidson returning to her center-back spot after her ACL injury. However, Davidson was named on the bench, presumably because she is not quite 90 minutes fit just yet. Instead, it was Midge Purce, who has played as a full-back at times earlier in her career.

3 points to start the season for Gotham FC

There was another surprise in the Gotham FC lineup with Katie Lampson getting the start over Esther González, who had only just recently returned from maternity leave. Over on the Boston side of things, the player many expected to be Boston's main attacking threat, Amanda Gutierres, was left on the bench to begin the game.

As the match got underway, it very quickly became clear that the wind was going to play a factor in this game. The wind was both knocking down and carrying the ball, depending on which way it was blowing at any given moment.

Meanwhile, both teams started by getting a feel of one another, which made for a little bit of a slog. While Gotham spent most of the fixture in Boston's defensive half, the Legacy started to build into the game starting around the 20-minute mark. The best chance of the half came in the 25th minute when Jaedyn Shaw let off a strong left-footed shot that Boston goalkeeper Casey Murphy got down and made a strong save on to keep the game scoreless.

As the half started to reach its conclusion, Gotham started to find their footing and was more comfortable and fluid than earlier on. But they would go into the halftime break yet to find the breakthrough.

Both teams' center forwards, Lampson for Gotham and Aissata Traoré for Boston, caused the most amount of problems in the first half. Traoré specifically caused the Gotham backline a lot of issues, and looks to be a good signing for this Boston team.

Gotham FC made two changes at halftime, with both Lampson and Sarah Schupansky coming off and being replaced by González and Jordynn Dudley in her professional debut. And just 10 minutes later, both players would be involved in the team's opening goal of the season.

In the 55th minute, a long ball from Shaw found Reale down the left wing, and the defender sent a dangerous cross into the box. The ball missed the outstretched leg of Dudley and went right to Legacy defender Bianca St-Georges. She tried to clear the ball, but it fell right to González, who scored on a first-time curling effort that left Murphy frozen on the goalline.

Boston, to their credit, came right back and made a strong push for an equalizer, piling on the pressure and coming close. That momentum was short-lived, however, as St-Georges committed a dumb and unnecessary foul on Dudley to pick up her second yellow of the game in the 77th minute, reducing them down to 10 players in a real momentum killer for the expansion side.

Subsequently, the red card helped the Bats, and the NJ/NY side held onto the 1-0 win to open their season with three points and spoil the Legacy party in front of a crowd of 30,000+.

It certainly was not Gotham's best or most convincing performance, but it was enough to get the three points in what ended up being a really tough, physical game. Players like Shaw, Carter, Savannah McCaskill, and Jaelin Howell had strong games and special shoutouts to both fullbacks. Reale managed a full 90 minutes after suffering an injury with the USWNT at the SheBelieves Cup, which initially looked like it would keep her out of this game. And to Purce as well playing as the right-back for the first time in a while and holding her own in that position.

And a few words on Dudley and her performance in this game. Coming on as a halftime sub, she made an instant impact and nearly came away with two goals. She had the best chance of the match by xG at .37. And Boston saw how dangerous a player she was, as despite just playing 45 minutes was fouled five times, the most of any player on the field for Gotham.

Next, the Bats head into a three-game homestand. Starting next Saturday, they welcome the North Carolina Courage before the other 2026 expansion team Denver Summit arrive next Wednesday, and then cap it off on Sunday, March 29, in a rematch of last year's quarterfinal matchup against the Orlando Pride.
