Setting a bright and promising way to kickstart the 2025 season, NJ/NY Gotham FC has signed defender Lilly Reale to a contract. The 21-year-old was quite the star at college and now joins Gotham through 2027. Reale comes in bearing several accolades that position her as one of the brightest up-and-coming stars in the game.

Among her many accolades are the awards of First-Team All-American, Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year-for three consecutive years-and the rare honor in UCLA history of being among the few to earn four First-Team All-Conference selections.

Still more, she steered UCLA in 2022 to win a national championship where she took Most Outstanding Defensive Player at the College Cup. Performance that then allowed her to list as a semifinalist for both the 2023 and 2024 versions of the prestigous MAC Hermann Trophy.

A defender with a winning mindset

When asked about joining Gotham FC, Reale was clear: “I couldn’t be more grateful to start my professional career at Gotham FC. I’m excited to make an impact and create something special this year.”

It’s not just about adjusting to the professional scene but about making a meaningful contribution from day one. Gotham FC’s General Manager, Yael Averbuch West, shares in that excitement.

“Lilly is an outstanding player who’s had tremendous success at the college level and with the U-23 National Team. We’re thrilled to welcome her to the club and can’t wait to see the impact she’ll make.”

Impact on Gotham and the NWSL

Reale's arrival at Gotham FC is not only a win for the club but a sign of growth in the NWSL, where teams now seek younger talent to up the level of competitiveness.

Reale brings much more to Gotham than skill and experience. Her journey tells the story of a player who's used to the struggle and can lead from the back. In the NWSL, where striking a balance between experienced players and young guns is important, Reale's signing definitely points to Gotham's strategic vision.

Roots that shape talent

Reale was born in Boston, Massachusetts. She started off her soccer steps at South Shore Select, starting to stand out since the beginning of her career. She played at Hingham High School and was a three-time South Shore Select All-American; she was also a Player of the Year.
