NJ/NY Gotham FC is in the middle of their preseason as the team prepares for the 2026 campaign. There have been a few additions to the roster, but otherwise, based on the fact that many players signed extensions during the 2025 season, not too many new players were expected. Nobody probably thought the Bats would add a goalkeeper, but alas, the club did so on Friday.
Gotham FC announced that the team added 21-year-old Teagan Wy. The contract will keep her with the Bats through the 2028 season. The goalkeeper joins the team after spending her collegiate career with the University of California, Berkeley, where she made 53 appearances, including 19 in 2025. Her senior year was clearly her best, for the player made the second-most saves in the ACC, with 81. She also led the Golden Bears to their first win in the NCAA tournament in a decade during her junior year.
Additionally, Wy has represented the United States at the youth levels and was the starter at the U-20 Women's World Cup in 2024. The young player and her teammates ended the tournament with the bronze medal. She was also recently a part of the U.S. Futures Camp in January 2025.
Wy is a talented keeper, and it makes sense that she has signed her first professional contract. Gotham FC is never afraid to sign young players, especially rookies. After all, they signed five players from college teams for the 2025 season, including the eventual Rookie of the Year, Lilly Reale. Plus, the team already has a few college signings this year, including Stanford University star, Andrea Kitahata.
Nevertheless, this is an interesting signing for Gotham. Wy could become a starter one day in the NWSL, and the NJ/NY side might be lucky that they signed her. However, what does this mean for the rest of the goalkeepers on the team? There were already three goalkeepers, and Ann-Katrin Berger is undoubtedly the starter.
Moreover, Ryan Campbell, who was a rookie last year, signed a contract extension in August. So, does that mean Shelby Hogan will be on the way out? That would make the most sense since she is a proven starter in the NWSL.
At the same time, could one of the other two goalkeepers be on the way out despite Berger being the starter and Campbell's contract extension? These are questions that must be asked, because as learned in the previous offseason, anything is possible and any player can shockingly leave the club.
Of course, one of the younger Gotham players could be loaned out for the 2026 season. Maybe Berger knows she will retire in a year or two, and this move helps the Bats plan for the future. Having a few goalkeepers already on the team that could take her place would facilitate the transition.
No matter what happens, fans cannot be upset with the signing of Wy. Like Campbell, she has so much potential and could be the future starter for Gotham FC.
