On Thursday, NJ/NY Gotham FC announced that the club had signed USWNT defender Emily Sonnett to a two-year contract extension, keeping her with the team through the 2028 season. She had originally signed with the club before the 2024 season, and if she sees out these two additional years, then this will be the longest tenured club of her professional career after prior stints at Portland Thorns FC, the Washington Spirit, and Seattle Reign FC.
Sonnett has established herself as a key member of this Gotham FC squad since her first time stepping on the field for the club. Prior to this season, she had appeared in all but one out of 52 NWSL regular-season matches and was a perfect 5/5 in their playoff matches. An injury has limited her minutes and appearances ever so slightly in 2026, but this contract extension is a clear sign that she is still viewed as a key member of this squad moving forward.
Tying Sonnett down to a contract extension a week before free agency began was very important for Gotham, with plenty of other high-profile free agents still needing a new contract. Ann-Katrin Berger, Jess Carter, Mandy Freeman, Rose Lavelle, and Midge Purce are all pending free agents. Knocking Sonnett off this list just gives them one less thing to worry about.
There was obviously speculation that the defender would make her way to the expansion team in Atlanta come 2028, given that she is originally from the nearby suburb of Marietta. And while this does not completely rule out that possibility, it does at least answer the question of where she will be playing in 2027.
And speaking of 2027, next summer's World Cup will also be something Sonnett would have weighed when making this decision. She should be a lock to make the roster. However, maintaining her spot as a starter for a championship-caliber team in a competitive environment will have been a key selling point for her to stay with Gotham.
Despite being 32 years old, Sonnett remains a key player and has not really shown any signs of slowing down. As mentioned earlier, she essentially plays if she's healthy enough and more often than not goes the full 90 minutes.
Given the lack of defensive depth, the amount of injuries they have had on the backline, and the recent trade of Lilly Reale, keeping a steady force like Sonnett around was more than likely seen as crucial for the Gotham front office.
With the expected jump in the salary cap for next season, as well as the new HIP Rule reportedly now dropping the criteria that players needed to be able to earn this money, the Bats should have $1.9 million in additional cap space to work with. Some of that money was used due to the signing of Guro Reiten and the extensions of Sonnett and Savannah McCaskill. Despite these signings, they should still have enough space to sign most, if not all, of their pending free agents to contract extensions as well as make additions to the squad.
With free agency set to open in less than a week, it is a very important point in the season for not just Gotham FC, but every other team in the league. While players can still re-sign with their current clubs after free agency opens, it does become ever so slightly harder to keep players once they start receiving offers from other teams. Thankfully, Sonnett will not be one of them.
