On Wednesday, NJ/NY Gotham FC announced plans to construct the first dedicated training facility in club history. They will move into the former Red Bull New York training facility in Whippany, New Jersey. The news comes after the announcement of the front office changes.
The plan is to transform the site into a 27,000-square-foot facility with the Gotham FC brand and identity being ever-present throughout the facility. The facility includes three grass fields, with one of which being heated, and plans for a fourth indoor turf field in place pending approval. Two of the grass fields are FIFA-certified and will be dedicated to first-team usage.
In addition to the fields, the complex will include "a 3,000-square-foot gym, hydrotherapy room, dedicated player recovery room and lounge, and a dining area, with daily meals prepared by a performance chef." The site will also include a "dedicated content studio and press room, as well as space for families of players and staff." Renovations will begin later this summer and are expected to be completed by summer 2027.
The social areas throughout the facility will connect to the existing buildings slated for renovation. This will create what the club is calling "the Gotham Quad", which the club describes as "a place for the Gotham community to relax, celebrate, and grow."
The facility will not only become the home of the club's sporting operations, but the team also aims for it to become a hub for youth soccer in the area. The expected cost for the entirety of the project is $35 million, with the entirety of it being privately funded.
This news comes on the heels of the Red Bulls opening their new training complex in Morris Township, New Jersey, at the end of April, vacating this facility that the two clubs had shared for a number of years. This project for Gotham also includes a 15-year lease that begins on September 1, potentially throwing into question the proposed move to Etihad Park, the future home of New York City FC, in Queens for the 2028 season.
This can only be described as positive news for the NJ/NY side. Much of their day-to-day schedule is now fully in their control and allows the club to operate on a timeframe that best suits their players and staff moving forward. Not only does this serve as a training facility, but the addition of a content studio and press room should lead to an uptick in content released by the club, both in volume and quality. This should help make the club brand much more visible both locally and internationally.
In addition, it puts into question the proposed move to Queens in 2028. While it does not rule out the move completely, it suggests that it may not be as much of a guarantee as some may have thought.
While it is very hard and expensive to find a large piece of land in the northern New Jersey area that would be in a suitable condition and location for a massive training facility like this, it does speak volumes that Gotham jumped at the opportunity to become the primary tenants at this facility seemingly as soon as RBNY moved out.
That being said, though, it is not an unreasonable distance from Etihad Park. Plus, having some level of continuity in the midst of a stadium move would help everyone involved in the transition process. Either way, the club's commitment to a huge part of their identity and day-to-day operations in New Jersey shows that even with a potential move to New York City, Gotham FC is committed to New Jersey and trying to stay as connected as possible to their roots.
