NJ/NY Gotham FC is about to head out on their three-game road trip. The Bats finally won their first match of the season after beating the North Carolina Courage 3-1 at home in New Jersey. They obtained a critical three points but now have a tough game ahead of them as they take on Angel City FC to begin this away stretch.
The California side is in fourth place, one spot above Gotham FC. They have two wins and two draws, with both wins coming in their last two matches. Alyssa Thompson has been a major reason for their success so far, but overall, their attacking options will be challenging to stop. Ann-Katrin Berger and Emily Sonnett must enforce the defense and lead them to ensure the Bats keep Angel City out of the goal.
Meanwhile, Gotham has proven they can survive without Tierna Davidson, who tore her ACL and is out for the rest of the season. Truthfully, their defenders are talented enough that they should be able to hold their ground for the rest of the year. What is concerning is the lack of defensive depth. With three games from Friday through next Saturday, will Juan Carlos Amorós utilize other players in the defense, like a midfielder? Truthfully, it is unlikely to happen against Angel City, but this is something to keep in mind.
Hopefully, the attack can pick up where they left off against North Carolina. Esther González must have a boost of confidence after she scored twice with Spain during the international break and her brace for Gotham FC. She will probably be the focus of the Angel City defense, but like the Bats, they will have multiple offensive players to stop.
