Gotham FC vs North Carolina Courage preview: The defending champs return home

Article image:Gotham FC vs North Carolina Courage preview: The defending champs return home

NJ/NY Gotham FC will open their 2026 home schedule when they welcome the North Carolina Courage to New Jersey. Both teams are coming off season-opening victories. Gotham started with a win over the 2026 expansion side Boston Legacy FC 1-0, and North Carolina defeated Racing Louisville FC by a score of 2-1.

While it was the right result on opening weekend for the Bats, there is still plenty the team can improve upon. There were times against Boston where it was evident that they were still getting up to speed and not firing at 100% just yet. This match against a good North Carolina side will be a really good early-season test and a better indicator of where the NJ/NY side is as the season gets going.

North Carolina, meanwhile, is coming off a promising victory where Ashley Sanchez scored both of the team's goals in their 2-1 victory. This means that she has already matched her entire 2025 goal output in just one game in 2026. Sanchez, having a good season, might be the key for the Courage.

The upcoming match marks the beginning of Gotham's first three-game week of the season, all three of which are at home. The week should provide a great opportunity for young players like Khyah Harper, Sofia Cook, Jordynn Dudley, and Andrea Kitahata, as well as the possible debut of the club's newest signing Guro Reiten. Here is a preview of Saturday's home opener.

Gotham FC vs North Carolina Courage preview

Date

The game will be played on Saturday, March 21.

Time

The match is scheduled to begin at 6:30 PM ET.

Location

The game will be played at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey.

How to watch

The fixture will be broadcast on Ion.

Weather

Temperatures will be in the mid-50s at kickoff and dropping a minimal amount down to 51 by the end of the game. Winds will be around 8 mph with 35% humidity and basically a 0% chance of rain. Sunset is set to come at 7:10 PM meaning that most of the first half will be played before the sun sets.

Injury report

Bruninha (hamstring), Mandy Freeman (lower leg), Midge Purce (thigh), Guro Reiten (excused absence), and Taryn Torres (SEI- knee) are all out for the home opener. Jaedyn Shaw (hamstring) is questionable. Mak Whitham is also out due to international duty.

Players to watch

After coming off the bench to score Gotham's game-winning goal last week, Esther González should be in line to start this week and should again play a big role in the outcome of the game. Hence, she is one to watch. The Bats' leading goal-scorer since joining the club in August 2023, the Spanish international looks likely to challenge for the Golden Boot again this season after finishing in the top five in each of the last two seasons.

As mentioned earlier, Sanchez looks like the Courage's main threat right now, especially with Manaka Matsukubo away on international duty with Japan. Coming off a brace last week, the Courage will need her to carry over that form to game two to give them the best chance of starting the season with two wins from two. Fans should pay attention to her, too.

Prediction

In some ways, this will be a tougher test than last week against Boston for Gotham, but in others, it will be easier. There's less of an unknown factor with North Carolina than Boston, and the Courage should be much less aggressive than what was seen last week with the Legacy. But it is also pretty clear that North Carolina is much better than Boston and should provide a bigger challenge from an ability perspective.

The prediction is a 2-1 win for Gotham, with the goals coming from González and Shaw for the NJ/NY side and Sanchez for North Carolina. This will be another close game that could go either way. Many people are split on just how good the 2026 North Carolina team will be, but they made some good offseason acquisitions, have a head coach that may better align with the strength of the squad, and also have a great attacking duo in Sanchez and Matsukubo. A North Carolina win against Gotham FC should not be completely ruled out.
