NJ/NY Gotham FC finished the regular season last weekend with a 4-1 win over Utah Royals FC, capping off a fantastic 2024. The Bats ended the year in third place for the first time with 56 points. Therefore, they will not be the underdogs in the postseason this time around. Instead, the ladies will defend the 2023 Championship as one of the top teams in the NWSL.
To do that, they first have to beat Portland Thorns FC. Gotham FC won the two games in the regular season, including the recent 2-0 win at home. The question is whether they can win again for a third time. The Thorns are still a good team and always compete in the NWSL Playoffs.
Meanwhile, Gotham will be hosting their first-ever playoff game at home. In other words, supporters can easily attend the fixture in person. This would be a great time to have the most fans out of any match at Red Bull Area this season. Plus, the team can really use everyone in the stands' support. The supporters can act as the twelfth player, making life difficult for Portland.
The unbeaten streak surely helps the Bats as they enter the playoffs. They have won or tied the last eight NWSL games. Players like Yazmeen Ryan and Ann-Katrin Berger have been vital to the recent success. In addition, the depth of the roster has aided Gotham FC to not lose during this time. The question is whether they can continue their form in the playoffs. If the answer is yes, then the Bats might find themselves back in the Championship match.

Portland has gone 2-3-0 in their last five NWSL fixtures. Gotham FC cannot be distracted by the Thorns recent form, thinking this game will be a little easier. The Bats must play the visiting side like they are in the finals.
