Valencia began their reset on Monday, with Ron Gourlay and Carlos Corberán leaving and Braulio Vázquez set to link up ahead of Tuesday’s match at Alavés.
Gourlay and Corberán arrived early at Paterna to collect personal items and say their goodbyes to staff and players. Gourlay does not intend to comment on his dismissal, while Corberán posted late on Sunday thanking supporters, players and Kiat Lim, without mentioning Gourlay.
Relations had soured as the Scot struggled in the market. Valencia have hired Braulio, a candidate Corberán proposed early in the year and which Gourlay rejected, after paying Osasuna his clause of 290,000 euros. In Singapore the decision to dismiss Gourlay came before Corberán’s, the former for a poor summer, the latter for results and performances.
Braulio returns to Valencia 13 years after leaving and will meet the squad in Vitoria after a midday farewell in Pamplona. His first task is to find a head coach, with the club signalling changes to job titles and responsibilities. Kiat Lim informed Gourlay and spoke with Braulio, who finalised details with Javier Solís.
Valencia are seeking a new coach. Ernesto Valverde is among names familiar to Braulio, while José Luis Mendilibar, Jagoba Arrasate and Javier Aguirre are also in the frame, though there have been no contacts so far. For now B team boss Óscar Sánchez steps in, having studied Quique Sánchez Flores’s Alavés until two in the morning before leading his first session on Monday.
