Former Chelsea boss could return to the dugout immediately
Graham Potter is set for a quick return to management, but his next destination might surprise a few.
The Englishman was recently sacked by West Ham last month after just six wins in 23 games in charge.
The Hammers were 19th in the Premier League table when the former Chelsea and Brighton manager was dismissed.
He was swiftly replaced by Nuno Espirito Santo, who had been the Premier League’s first managerial casualty of the campaign after he was let go by Nottingham Forest.
However, unlike before Potter joined West Ham, where he had an extended break following his sacking from Chelsea, the 50-year-old is preparing himself to return to the dugout almost immediately.
Reports claim that Potter is set to take over the Swedish national team, after the Swedish FA sacked Jon Dahl Tomasson, the former Blackburn manager.
Sweden are struggling in their bid to qualify for next year’s World Cup, where they are bottom of Group B.
The Scandinavian side are winless in their four qualifiers so far, and are looking to appoint Potter on a short-term deal to see them into next year’s tournament in Canada, Mexico and the United States.
Sweden, who boast star Premier League strikers Viktor Gyokeres and Alexander Isak, were beaten 2-0 at home by Switzerland and 1-0 by Kosovo in the recent international break, and Gyokeres and Isak started up front together in both games.
The Sweden squad is packed with names from England’s top flight, like Tottenham’s Lucas Bergvall, Aston Villa’s Victor Lindelof, Leeds’ Gabriel Gudmundsson, and Newcastle’s Anthony Elanga.
Potter had previously opened the door to managing Sweden, revealing that he was in the country as he considered his next career move.
"I'm between jobs and just left the Premier League,” Potter told Swedish media outlet Fotbollskanalen.
"I'm open to anything, really, where I feel I can help. The job as head coach of the Swedish national team is fantastic.
"I have feelings for Sweden. I love the country and I love Swedish football. I have a lot to be grateful for towards Swedish football.
"So yes, it would be a fantastic opportunity for me, obviously."
Potter is no stranger to Sweden, having made his name managing Ostersund.
There, he led the club to three promotions into the top tier of Swedish football, as well lifting the Swedish Cup.
He was in charge when they took on Arsenal in the Europa League back in 2017, beating the north Londoners at the Emirates Stadium, but they were defeated 4-2 on aggregate.
