Graham Potter is in advanced discussions to become the new manager of the Sweden national team, BBC Sport understands. The 50-year-old, who has deep ties to the country from his transformative spell at Östersunds FK, has publicly expressed interest in the role, and talks are said to be progressing swiftly.

Sweden parted ways with Jon Dahl Tomasson earlier this week after a disastrous start to their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, which has seen them collect just one point from four matches. Monday’s 1-0 defeat at home to Kosovo proved the final blow for the Dane, whose dismissal has left the Swedish FA seeking an immediate reset.

For Potter, the move would mark a return to the nation where his managerial reputation was first forged. During seven years with Östersund, he guided the club from Sweden’s fourth tier to the Allsvenskan and claimed the Swedish Cup in 2017, a fairytale rise that earned him widespread admiration.

Since leaving Sweden, Potter has endured mixed fortunes in England, with stints at Swansea, Brighton, Chelsea, and most recently West Ham. His potential appointment is viewed by many in Stockholm as a natural reunion, and a chance to rekindle the magic that once defined his Scandinavian adventure.
