There is belief survival is achievable if Daniel Farke adds a couple of players in January, with attacking additions sought. Joel Piroe’s role has come under scrutiny as the club weigh PSR considerations.

Speaking on the Inside Elland Road podcast, Graham Smyth said: “Can a newly-promoted team carry a bit more of a luxury. We know what he’s going to do when he gets a chance, but what is he doing when he’s not getting any chances? Is he adding enough?”

Piroe has slipped down the pecking order despite 19 Championship goals last season, and he last started in the 5-0 defeat to Arsenal.

Recent links include Joshua Zirkzee, Ruben Vargas, Raheem Sterling and Tyrique George. If arrivals are to happen, sales may be required and it has been reported Leeds will listen to offers for Willy Gnonto if a profit can be made.

Piroe has been restricted to cameos and is rarely Farke’s first change, even with Lukas Nmecha injured. An exit next month would not surprise and, if a viable bid arrives, he will surely be sold.

He has alerted his agents that a January move is likely, and interest in forwards such as Zirkzee would only push him further down the order. Piroe signed a four-year deal two and a half years ago. Bought for £16m including add-ons, amortisation means offers above £6m would represent a profit. Whether Leeds sell in January remains unclear.
