Lutsharel Geertruida has confirmed he will not return to Sunderland after last season’s loan, prompting messages from Granit Xhaka, Brian Brobbey and Chris Rigg.

According to Sunderland Echo, the former Feyenoord defender arrived on a season-long deal late in a hectic summer window and made 30 appearances in all competitions as Regis Le Bris’ side finished seventh in the Premier League, securing Europa League football for the first time in the club’s history.

Sunderland had been in talks with RB Leipzig over a permanent move, as set out in last month’s retained list, but the 26-year-old has now confirmed his departure and will return to his parent club.

In a social media message, the Netherlands defender thanked team-mates, staff and supporters, said he was proud to make his Premier League debut at a special club and called the campaign memorable. He added that he had enjoyed his time on and off the pitch and wished Sunderland the very best for the future.

Captain Xhaka led the replies with a warm farewell. Nordi Mukiele and Romaine Mundle also sent supportive notes, while Brobbey and Rigg posted sad-faced emojis in response.
