Granit Xhaka told Sunderland supporters that Europa League qualification is only the start, delivering an emotional address on the Stadium of Light pitch. The captain spoke after a 2-1 victory over Chelsea sealed seventh place on the final day.

According to Sunderland Echo, a capacity crowd remained for a post-match lap of appreciation as the squad saluted a remarkable campaign.

With his name ringing around the ground, Xhaka asked for two minutes, thanked the owner, Flo, the coach, players and staff, and paid tribute to fans home and away. He said he promises that, from his side as captain, this is just the beginning and that the team want more. He urged supporters to enjoy the moment and said they would see them soon.

Head coach Régis Le Bris also addressed the crowd, thanking fans for their backing across the campaign. He recalled last year’s Wembley trip and called 24 May a special day, and said their support had been impressive and even stronger than last season. He praised the owners, head of football and backroom staff for their hard work, and hailed a massive achievement for players who can be proud.

Le Bris told supporters to enjoy the summer and said the team will need them again next season as they aim to build on this progress.
