Sunderland have emerged with a stronger hand after positive talks ended with Granit Xhaka reaffirming his commitment, a development that surprised Chelsea.
As reported by Sunderland Echo, the saga is not closed and Chelsea still believe a deal could happen, helped by the lure of reuniting with Xabi Alonso.
Sunderland held firm after an initial £8 million offer, which meant either a major rise, roughly three times that figure, or the player would need to push.
This week’s discussions suggest Xhaka will not agitate. Chelsea were expected to return with only a minor uplift, unlikely to alter Sunderland’s stance. There is no set valuation, though every player ultimately has a price.
Replacing Xhaka would be costly and disruptive. His blend of defensive work and elite creative passing is rare, and his off-field influence is significant. Keeping him now, even if his market value dips over the next year, looks better business.
Sunderland accept sales will be necessary at times, but intend to act on their terms. Florent Ghisolfi and Régis Le Bris prize unity, and Xhaka’s intensity has raised standards when he is all in. What happens if Alonso pushes again or Chelsea change stance remains uncertain, but for now the momentum has shifted towards Sunderland.
