Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka has marked the first anniversary of his move with a heartfelt Instagram message to supporters.
He arrived at the Stadium of Light on 30 July last year and has since become integral to a side that finished seventh in the Premier League, securing Europa League football.
Earlier this summer he was linked with a surprise exit to Chelsea, with newly appointed Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso identifying the midfielder as a key transfer target at Stamford Bridge. Ultimately, the 33-year-old has opted to remain on Wearside.
On Instagram he shared a collage soundtracked by Elvis Presley’s "Can’t Help Falling in Love". He reflected on how quickly the year has passed, the progress made together, gratitude for challenges and memories, and an ambition to go even bigger.
Head coach Regis Le Bris said the topic was closed and that Xhaka loves Sunderland, praising him as a good captain and strong leader. The new season is less than a month away.
