Granit Xhaka will miss Monday’s meeting with Burnley, but the Sunderland captain has offered supporters an injury update and a show of support ahead of the match.

The head coach said the midfielder is doing well and will have another assessment in around one week, after which the next stage of his rehabilitation will be set. He added the process should probably take about three more weeks.

As he continues working at the Academy of Light, Xhaka posted from Wearside: “Back to work. Comeback loading”.

He also told fans he would be with the team in spirit and with them in the stands, adding that their energy makes the difference in keeping the points at home. He rounded off the message with a rallying cry.

Sunderland, beaten 2-0 by Scott Parker’s side at Turf Moor in August, will be aiming to make amends.
