Internazionale and Barcelona have just conjured up the greatest two-legged European tie in living memory.
It finished 7-6 at the end of 30 minutes extra-time to Inter, after two pulsating 3-3 draws and 180+ minutes of breathtaking Champions League football.
Both games swung one way and another throughout, Inter equalising at the death to take everybody’s breath away one last time.
I’m glad this semi-final was settled in the 30 minutes of extra time in the San Siro. It would have been a heartbreaking injustice for any of these players to miss a penalty in a shoot-out, after all they had given in these games.
Well done to the Nerazzurri for reaching the Champions League Final.
These games have really whetted my appetite for a potential return to Europe’s premier competition next season.
Newcastle United have faced both of these European giants in the Champions League down the years.
Nobody on Tyneside will ever forget the Tino Asprilla hat-trick that downed a Barca team featuring the likes of Rivaldo, Figo and Luis Enrique at St James’ Park in 1997.
I was at the match with my late father and this was such a special night, a real Cat Stevens ‘Father and Son’ occasion.
A few years later and Sir Bobby Robson’s fine side played out of their skins against Inter at the San Siro. The hosts were lucky to escape with a 2-2 draw after an inspired Alan Shearer brace for United.
Going forward and I would love to see an Inter v PSG Champions League Final on the last day of May.
PSG are one of United’s more recent foes in Europe and are a different side to the one we hammered in 2023.
They hold a handy 1-0 advantage gained away at the Emirates against Arsenal, heading into the second leg.
Nothing would give me greater pleasure than seeing whinge bag Arteta and the self-entitled Gooners dumped out of the competition.
Newcastle United are now gatecrashing the now not so cosy little cartel party in the EPL and we’ve definitely got Arsenal in our sights for next season as we strive to move on up.
