The Green Angels, an AS Saint-Étienne supporters’ group, said in a statement on X that police violence followed Saturday’s 1-0 defeat in Dunkerque, leaving multiple injuries.
The group’s account describes a charge in a confined area after full time despite no hostility, with baton blows to heads, close-range flash-ball fired above the waist, and tear gas affecting fans, including women pressed against a wall.
About 250 Saint-Étienne fans travelled north. During the game, one supporter displayed a flag of undisclosed content, and a later attempt to detain him outside the away section preceded the escalation. Flash-ball use hastened the return to the buses, and several injured were only treated back in Saint-Étienne.
The group put the toll at 20 injured, citing fractures, concussions, an eye ulcer and open wounds. A young member remains in hospital after an LBD shot that caused a pneumothorax and internal kidney haemorrhage.
AS Saint-Étienne has issued a statement supporting injured fans and is monitoring their condition. The club called for football to remain a shared, convivial occasion and condemned all violence. As the away club, ASSE cannot lodge a complaint but could join as a civil party if supporters do.
