The warning signs are flashing again in Rio Grande do Sul. After the loss to Flamengo, Grêmio dropped into the Brasileirão 2026 relegation zone, sitting in 17th place.

A History of Instability

A detailed survey shows that, since returning to Série A in 2023 (the only calm year, with Luis Suárez), Grêmio has struggled to stay near the top of the table:

Brasileirão 2024: Marked by the climate tragedy, the team spent 11 straight rounds in the relegation zone. Even after leaving the drop zone, they failed to break into the top 10, securing survival only in the third-to-last round.
Brasileirão 2025: The drama repeated itself at the start of the campaign, costing coach Gustavo Quinteros his job. Under Mano Menezes, Tricolor flirted with danger for most of the season, finishing in a modest 9th place only in the final round.
Brasileirão 2026: With Luís Castro in charge, the team climbed as high as 8th place, but the recent drop in form pushed them back into the relegation zone.

Across the last 91 rounds of the national league, Grêmio was either in the bottom four or on the "second page" of the table (below 10th place) for almost the entire period. They spent only 16 rounds in the top 10 and were inside the G-4 just once since 2024.

Upcoming Challenges
