Grêmio fan dies at Arena during Palmeiras match as family allege medical delay | OneFootball

According to Globo.com, Grêmio supporter Euclides Maciel dos Santos, 74, died at the Arena during Sunday's match against Palmeiras, with his family alleging a delayed medical response.

He collapsed in the Upper East stand after a cardiorespiratory arrest. A nursing technician in the crowd began CPR. His grandson, Jonas Rodrigues dos Santos, 20, estimates it took 25 to 30 minutes for Unimed medics to reach them.

His daughter, Tainá dos Santos, 30, says the family were called at 11h23 when he fainted and that death was declared at 12h14. She says she only learned of the death when staff brought him down in a lift.

Nursing technician Elvia Calixto also questions the response time. She says she heard over radio there was only one defibrillator in an ambulance across the stadium. She believes a faster intervention could have given him a chance.

Unimed said its emergency teams act immediately under advanced life support protocols. It said resources for the fixture included six mobile ICUs, six doctors, six nurses, six nursing technicians, plus equipment and a regulating doctor at the operations command centre.

Grêmio said civil firefighters gave first aid, Unimed continued treatment in the stand then the concourse, and resuscitation failed. The club expressed condolences.

The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon after a short delay for a son based abroad. The family say the club have not contacted them, and Jonas says they remain Grêmio supporters but want others not to face the same ordeal.
