According to Globo.com, Grêmio plan to cash in on on-loan striker Matías Arezo, with Peñarol holding a four million dollars purchase option, R$ 19.9 million at the current rate. The club are not interested in his return.
The on-loan forward is expected to start against Platense on Thursday at 21:30 Brasília time at Campeón del Siglo in Montevideo. The fixture is in Conmebol Libertadores Group E, the same as Corinthians.
He is in his second loan spell with Peñarol, running to the end of this year, having first left in July last year. Peñarol wanted to buy him then but could not raise the cash, so the loan was extended. River Plate of Uruguay hold 50% of his economic rights and can sell their share.
His form has encouraged local expectations that he stays beyond this deal, and Peñarol are considering taking out a loan to meet Grêmio’s asking price. A source close to the club said it is still early to guarantee the purchase. Grêmio are only awaiting the deposit to complete the sale, with no further talks required.
Arezo is Peñarol’s leading scorer in 2026 with seven goals in 13 games, surpassing his Grêmio return of six in 37. After rejoining Peñarol last year, he produced 12 goals and four assists in 24 appearances. Grêmio bought 50% of his rights in July 2024 for three million euros, R$ 17 million at the time, but he never nailed down a starting place and asked to leave mid last year.
