Grêmio ended a 104-day wait for an away win with a 3-0 at Deportivo Riestra, powered by a sharper attack and a defence now on five straight clean sheets before facing Flamengo on Sunday.

According to Globo.com, the run comprises wins over Riestra 3-0, Coritiba 1-0 and Confiança 2-0, plus draws with Athletico and Palestino. It is the club’s longest such streak in recent years outside the Campeonato Gaúcho. In 2025 they also went five without conceding, that time at the start of the state competition.

Luís Castro said it is a good milestone, the team have stabilised defensively and produced a strong result.

Flamengo provide a stern test on Sunday, they have the Brasileirão’s best attack with 26 goals in 13 matches. They face Independiente Medellín in the Libertadores on Thursday before meeting Grêmio.

In this current run, Riestra, Palestino and Confiança were started by centre-backs Gustavo Martins and Viery together. The academy pair have begun 10 matches as a duo, keeping six clean sheets.

Viery’s performances have attracted Benfica, Brighton and Newcastle, the latter sending scouts to the Gre-Nal in the Gauchão final. Lille and Bologna have also made informal enquiries.

Grêmio resume training on Thursday after a Wednesday off. They are 14th in the Brasileirão on 17 points, two ahead of Corinthians, the first side in the relegation zone.
