Grêmio open talks for Renato return after Luís Castro exit | OneFootball

Grêmio have opened discussions to bring back head coach Renato Portaluppi following the dismissal of Luís Castro. The club made initial contact soon after confirming the change. Renato has been a free agent since leaving Vasco in June.

According to Globo.com, negotiations are under way, though a gap remains between the salary Renato wants and the club’s offer.

Agent Gerson Oldenburg is handling talks with the board. Any agreement would mark the coach’s fifth spell at the club, where he is an idol as player and manager.

On Saturday, assistant Alexandre Mendes was at the Arena do Grêmio to watch the 2-1 defeat to Vasco in a direct relegation fight. The decision to sack Luís Castro was taken and announced early on Sunday afternoon.

Renato previously led Grêmio in 2010, 2013, 2016 to 2021, and 2022 to 2024, departing at the end of last season. His honours include the Copa do Brasil, the Copa Libertadores and the Recopa Sudamericana.

Technical coordinator Felipão will act as interim for the Botafogo match on Wednesday.
