Grêmio left-back Marlon has undergone successful surgery on his right ankle, according to Globo.com.

The fracture occurred in the second half of Thursday's match against Vitória, his right foot catching in the turf before he fell onto the ankle. He left the pitch by ambulance and was taken straight to hospital.

The operation took place on Friday afternoon at Hospital Moinhos de Vento in Porto Alegre, and he is expected to be discharged on Sunday.

The injury affected ligaments, but there were no ruptures to worsen the diagnosis.

He will use an immobilising device on the foot and begin physiotherapy in the coming days, supported by a personal physiotherapist. Grêmio estimate a five-month recovery, though there is internal hope he could return sooner.
