Grêmio’s three costly Uruguayans, Cristian Olivera, Matías Arezo and Felipe Carballo, have underwhelmed and now present issues for the club to resolve. They cost about US$ 10.7 million, and Olivera has a loan to Bahia lined up to the end of 2026, with an option to buy.

Public comments soured relations with supporters. Arezo said: "Ele sempre me disse que seu sonho é jogar no Nacional e que está buscando seu lugar", he told El Espectador Deportes.

Olivera tried to join Nacional and even moved to Montevideo, but Grêmio rejected the offer as too low. His record is 37 appearances, five goals and two assists, and he has expressed dissatisfaction with Mano Menezes.

Arezo is on loan at Peñarol until the end of this month and, while he wants to stay, there is no guarantee. Grêmio are negotiating a sale, but the Uruguayans want to pay less than the US$ 4 million option.

Carballo, signed in late 2022, is recovering from a ruptured right-knee ACL while on loan at Portland Timbers, with a return expected only late in the first half of 2026. He said he stayed in a hotel after a New York Red Bulls loan to avoid settling in Porto Alegre again, and Nacional tried to bring him back before his MLS move.
