Grifo runs rings round Albania

Freiburg midfielder Vicenzo Grifo was Albania’s kryptonite as he produced two goals and an assist to earn Italy a morale-boosting iwn.

Roberto Mancini’s side had fallen behind early on when Ardian Ismaijli rose highest to loop a header over Gianluigi Donnarumma from Nedim Bajrami’s free-kick.

But Grifo’s near-post cross was poked home by Giovanni Di Lorenzo to level before he slotted in from close range himself after being unselfishly laid off by Giacomo Raspadori following a quick Italian counter-attack.

The 29-year-old rounded off the victory with a curler from the edge of the box midway through the second half after Albania had failed to clear Marco Verratti’s cross.

Svanberg inspires Sweden

Scorers: Vega 60′; Rohdén 54′, Svanberg 84′.

Raúl Jiménez returned to the pitch but it was not enough for Mexico to avoid defeat against Sweden in their final friendly before kicking off their World Cup group against Poland on Tuesday.

After a tight first half the Swedes nipped ahead nine minutes into the second half when Mattias Svanberg’s cross into the box was failed to be cut out by any Mexico defender and allowed Marcus Rohdén in to force the ball home.

The Mexicans were level on the hour mark through Alexis Vega’s cross-shot after he was played in by Miguel Herrera.

But it was Sweden who nicked the win six minutes from time with Svanberg turning from provider to goalscorer who struck home a rebound from a blocked free-kick through the legs of Guillermo Ochoa.

Füllkrug stakes his claim

Niclas Füllkrug marked his international debut with the winning goal as Germany struggled to overcome Oman.

Borussia Dortmund striker Youssoufa Moukoko became the youngest German debutant since 1954 but Hansi Flick’s side were subdued in their attacking play in the first half.

Füllkrug came off the bench at half-time and immediately came close to making the breakthrough with a instinctive shot from 12 yards out which forced Ibrahim Al Mukhaini into a fingertip save.

The shock was nearly on as Oman broke away at will as the second period went on but the final ball was always lacking, and thankfully for Germany their blushes were spared late on.

Kai Havertz strode to the edge of the box and slipped an incisive ball into the path of the Werder Bremen forward to lash under the body of Al Mukhaini.

Piatek bags late winner

Scorers: Piątek 85′.

Krzysztof Piątek came off the bench to bag a late winner as Poland signed off before the World Cup with a win over Chile.

The Salernitana striker reacted quickest to Claudio Bravo’s tipped save to nod home the rebound from six yards out to seal the victory for Czesław Michniewicz’s side.

Turkey see off spirited Scotland

Scorers: Kabak 40′, Ünder 48′; McGinn 62′.

Turkey survived a second half fightback from Scotland to seal the win in Diyarbakır.

Ozan Kabak gave Turkey the lead after getting on to the end of Hakan Çalhanoğlu’s free-kick and powering a header past Craig Gordon just before half time.

Before a blistering counter-attack from the edge of the Turkey box to the edge of the Scotland box was finished off with aplomb by Cengiz Ünder just after the restart.

John McGinn pulled one back for Scotland midway through the second half, powering away from Çağlar Söyüncü before unleashing a left-footed drive into the bottom corner.

Argentina hit UAE for five

Scorers: Álvarez 17′, Di María 25′, 36′, Messi 44′, Ćorrea 60′.

Ángel Di María was in inspired form as a breathtaking first-half display saw Argentina thrash the United Arab Emirates.

Lionel Scaloni’s side edged ahead in the 17th minute with Lionel Messi being set through on goal before laying it on a plate for Julian Àlvarez to tap home at the far post.

The second goal was a work of true quality with Di María catching Marcos Acuña’s cross perfectly to volley into the bottom corner from 12 yards out.

The Juventus winger then danced through the UAE defence before rounded the keeper and poking in his second 11 minutes later before Messi got in on the act just before half-time, finishing off a sublime team move with a precise finish.

Substitutes Rodrigo De Paul and Joaquin Correa then combined to make it five midway through the second half.
